Fall has definitely arrived in Santa Fe. Leaves are a changin’ and snow appeared on the peaks. It’s starting to feel more like home here - I know how to get around the city and the house is feeling cozy. I just bought a bunch of piñon wood for fires. We haven’t had to use the fireplace yet, but it’s coming. I’m looking forward to the season’s reflection of the need to hibernate - to go within. I’m wearly of starting new long-term projects as I would like to start taking marimba lessons but for some reason I’m holding back. It’s as if I dont want to plant new seeds as they may not be hearty enough by the time my inner winter arrives, to survive the freeze. Who knows. Warmth comes in many ways.
Santa Fe is a very interesting mix - not quite as homogeneous as I thought it might be. Though SF is decidedly pro-Obama, there is a very conservative element too. There are farmers and actors; rich and poor; Mexicans and whiteys; though not a whole lot of blacks. There are rough edges and pompous marshmallow centers. I was at the farmer’s market today (which is amazing by the way; I’ll devote a post tho that soon) and overheard a woman ask where she might be able to find avocados. The man she asked laughed loudly and made sure the woman felt a least a little stupid for asking. “You’re joking!” he proclaimed. “This is a local market!” People are very proud of the organic-local-liberal-diy-unmainstream-ness which can be quite a trun-off, when expressed in such a negative way. However, people here are very friendly for the most part and will take the time to stop and chat with you. Most people make you feel very welcome and appriciated.
I’ve become hooked on heirloom tomatoes. The local-er the better. The tomatoes at the market have alot longer to ripen since they dont have to travel such a long distance. I tell you - AMAZING! I cant even describe how much flavor they have. It makes me wonder about the nature of commercial agriculture and why conventional tomatoes that have to trave 1000 miles are cheaper than organic ones grown 60 miles away. Why are raw nuts more expensive than roasted and salted ones?
There are some interesting shifts at the gallery. The director left and is starting a new gallery. The owners have now been installed as interim governors directors. It sort of feels like a coup d’etat. I will share more on that later.
We are currently being pelted by hail.
Kara is really getting into her classes. She’s at a workshop today for something called Human Neuro-Linguistic Programming. She’s very busy and we dont get to see eachother as much as I would like but she’s really growing and its not a long program.
So we like it here and will probably stay for awhile.
My mom and Kara’s parents came down for a week. It was fun. We went to the balloon festival in ABQ but got rained out for the evening session. There were about 600 balloons there! I’ll leave you with some pics Kara took of the fest.

Greetings!
It’s been a week or so since the last post. Kara starts school tomorrow and we are in a point in Santa Fe festivities known as “Fiesta” (not the most clever title, but the point is relayed). The Fiestas have been occurring in SF since 1712 and “celebrate the Spanish retaking of the city in 1692 by Don Diego de Vargas from the Pueblo tribes who had occupied the city since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.” It’s really a crazy event as it a). celebrates the conquering and slaughter of Native Americans b). contains a pet parade c). and has a pagan ritual burning of a two story effigy named Zozobra, who symbolizes a year of gloom. More on that later. People drive around screaming, “viva la fiesta!”
Here are some pics from our first hike in Bandelier National Monument.
Frank enters our new home.
These caves we’re all charred on the inside and we theorized that this was the heat for the home as well as a ritual fire. All the holes on the side were for holding up structures in front of the caves.
We love our new cave home!

Our cats are still the cutest things ever. Luna has taken to getting up onto the ledge of the widows about 20 feet up. She does this by way of large bookcase. We hope she doesn’t hurt herself.
Luna likes her tail.
Aurora likes to be dragged around.
So Zozobra. What can be said about this event? It’s a two story pagan effigy aka “Old Man Gloom.” He has pouty red lips that move up and doen and he wears a bow tie. When it gets close to burn time, he moans and groans and almost sounds like an orgasmic ogre. The week leading up to the burn, people drop off things in a “burn box” like parking tickets and court papers - anything that is gloomy. Here is a video from last year.
A drum group outside the festival grounds.
Zozobra brings out the best in us all.
Apparently, his left arm (his left, your right) malfunctioned and since they are supposed to ignite first, he ignited his body at the same time so he burned a little quicker than normal.
Toast.
Yay! We burned him!

So after walking through fiery pits and thorny paths lined with broken glass, we now have internet at home (the local ISP has very stringent requirements).
Frank will be taking the job at Manitou Gallery and is starting this Wednesday (it is strange writing in the third person, though it does help to view oneself objectively). Manitou is a very different kind of gallery than the kind I am used to - or shows very different art than the art I surrounded myself in in Houston (switching to first person here; Andrew will be proud). They show everything from this:

to this:

It is interesting to be taking this journey into an artworld that feels totally separate from the one I departed. It certainly is refreshing to be out of the pomp that is not quite as apparent here but most certainly exists, though perhaps in another form.
Our old friends Elia and Diana came down to visit. They live ouside Indianapolis and were visiting Elia’s sister in Manitou Springs, CO. Manitou, I found out is an Algonquian word for spirit, qi, shabda or however you put that omnipresent force. Here are some pics from our hike up the Atalaya Mountain Trail - a 7 mile hike but we didnt summit the mountain (9121 ft.) though we convinced ourselved we did.

Diana learns about all the animals of the arroyo, as seen through the lens of a six year old.

Elia drove up to meet us at the trailhead in his old subterranean truck.

An old wall from the first crusades.

It looks like the top right?
Our house (first wrote “hose” here, instead of “house” and thought you should know) is starting to shape up nicely. We have a coffee table (we wonder about the origin of this designation of this table as “coffee.” More often than coffee, I’ve seen magazines upon this table. Apparently a late development in the history of furniture, Wikipedia is no help in this matter as it believes this mesa to be a place to put coffee) and artwork is starting to pop up on the walls.

We decided to line dry our clothes in the dry heat as the dryers at the local laundromat, as Ms. Champion said, “are unacceptable.”

TTFN!

We have our house almost in order and it is looking and feeling cozier by the day. There is a plant nursery 3 blocks away that carries an amazing variety of plants including tons of fruit trees. Kara is already planning our backyard garden and purchased several varieties of leafy greens and herb seeds. Right now the “garden” is a haven to every kind of weed and we have a kingdom of fire ants that busily are building their already huge dome into an empire. There is a crab apple tree out there, sans apples. We also found an awesome store/restaurant/flea market called Jackalope. They have everything including…
Prairie Dogs!
and HUGE sunflowers
Frank has a job almost… He had an interview at a gallery called Manitou which a good friend of ours works at and it went well. We will be going to their opening this Thursday to check out the atmosphere, but we are 99 percent sure Frank will take it. We will finally have health insurance - only a couple of weeks late;) (if you read the last post about our ER experience you will understand why). It’s a sales position but it’s a different story when people are coming to you versus calling others to try and get them to advertise in a magazine
Last Friday we went to the Santa Fe Brewing Company to see Green Mountain Grass, a bluegrass band from Austin. They were GRREAATT and we danced for a solid 2 hrs barefoot with other hippy boogiers. The place is a bit out of the town and we could see tons of stars when we left around midnight.

Sweaty Happy Frankie!
Sweaty Happy Kara!
Last Sunday, we went on our first hike. We drove out to Jemez Springs on Highway 4 and pulled off at a trail that took us about 2 miles in thick lush forest of cedar and pine and wildflowers and sweetgrass to a decent waterfall. The trees were producing a sap that sent the aroma of syrup in the air. Right before we arrived a thunder/hail storm had come through and left the trees and ground steaming. There were pockets of hail on the mossy ground (dippin dots -icecream of the future everywhere!). Kara’s back held out well -walking on the moist earth was much kinder to her than cement and granite. We will post the pics from this soon.
the drive to the trails
trail food…munch munch grrrrr!
aaaaahhhh…mountains, trails here we come.
Yaya!
We already have our first visitors soon! This Wed. our old roommates, Elia and Diana, from crazy toewurk days (early college haze) will be dropping in on us. Yeah!! We don’t really have the ins and outs of Santa Fe yet, but it will be wonderful to catch up with them, it has been a while.
We might have located our stand in Empire -a place called The Santa Fe Baking Co. It is about a mile away from our house, has wireless and very funky and HIPPY. They serve up good Southwest Mex food and even offer a vegan bowl for Kara to munch on. Since we still do not have internet at our place (crazy internet karma going on here), this has become our haven.
More to come soon, but for now, we sign off.
Frank and Jesse and unnamed pooch. Jesse sold us some extra closet storage. He is going back to Vancouver after finishing up at St. John’s College.

bye bye house
Well we made it to Santa Fe. It’s dry and warm and it seems to rain every day. The hollyhocks, lavender and various wildflowers are in full bloom and fragrance the cool breeze.
Our drive up on the first day was somewhat easy but long. Luna and Aurora meowed a bit at the beginning then slept the rest of the way. By the time we reached Amarillo at 10pm Kara was getting grumpy but nothing a snack of trail mix and restful sleep couldnt fix. The cats were curious about this new space and Luna had her usual fits of rage after being released from the kitty cage. During the night they crawled on our heads and kept us up most of the night.
The next day was a five hour drive to Santa Fe watching the landscape change from flat to mountainous. The cats were not excited to get back into the cages and were more vocal about it. Luna batted at Aurora and Frank as she was put into the plastic jail. During the drive, they both freaked out a bit - Luna did her best to run around in circles and Aurora clawed at the metal front, bloodying her nails a bit. We drove through some storms and strange and interesting towns in the panhandle.
We arrived at about 1pm and retrieved our keys from Kokopelli Properties. The house was freshly painted with low VOC paints but still was somewhat smelly. Kara is convinced that the former tenant put a witch spell on her because she swears she remembers the house to be 200 sq. ft. larger with a wall of windows. Perhaps the house is larger including the garage and there are definately some good windows on the south side, but the memory can play tricks on one. The house has a cute fireplace and a wonderful backyard and has great potential.
before arrangements
after arrangements
It was Kara’s birthday and after we loaded the goods from our car in the house we trekked on over to Body, a cafe/spa/yoga studio/boutique/performance space (does it sound like we’d fit in yet?). We hada meal of vegan/gluten-free lasagna, spaghetti and salad (yes, gluten-free). Then for Kara’s birthday dessert we had the best freakin’ chocolate gnache and carrot cake made completely of carrots and a pine nut icing. That night our neighbors set off fireworks in honor of Kara’s 28th year.
The next day we rented a 16 foot Uhaul and moseyed down to the the ABF facility in Albuquerque to pick up our goods. A 16 foot truck does not handle as well as the VW but it wasnt that hard to drive (empty, that is). Frank’s mom’s cousin Janet and her husband Ron graciously agreed to help us unload and load. Ron is somewhat of an engineer so it helped to have his point of view in loading the Uhaul. We got it all in nice and snug in a couple hours and we were on our way. We decided to leave the Uhaul and go have lunch at the Flying Star, an Albuquerque staple.
As soon as we got in their van, Kara started to feel an old back injury. As we got closer to Flying Star, Kara could not contain her grimaces any longer which got the attention of Frank. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the Flying Star, Kara could not eat and was taken to Janet and Ron’s house to lie down and watch TV while Janet and Frank finished up their lunch. When Frank got back to their house, Kara still could not go anywhere, and Ron offered to drive with Frank to Santa Fe and unload the Uhaul (thank you Ron!). Meanwhile back at Janet and Ron’s house, Janet was graciously trying everything to make Kara feel better - a heating pad, Harry Potter movie, and a hot bath. But the pain was getting worse. When Frank and Ron arrived back in Albuquerque, it was time to go to the ER for Kara, who was huddled in fetal position, whimpering expletives. The drive over to the ER seemed like a looooong time for Kara, and Frank was trying his best to not lose his cool.
When we arrived at the ER there were not too many people there, but some of them were complaining of waiting for 5 hours. Kara did not think she could last another 5 hours in the state she was and got soo upset that she vomited in the hallway, curled up in fetal position, and continued to whimper expletives (a bit louder this time). This seemed to be the magic trick to get her moved up on the list and she was somewhat promptly (as prompt as things can be in an ER). After taking down general info and a description of symptoms, we were escorted back to a little room, where Kara was given a nice cocktail of 800 mg of ibuprofin, valium, a shot of morphine in one butt cheek and another shot of an anti-nausea med in the other. After all of this, Kara was very dopey, and did not feel a thing. But as Frank escorted her out to Janet’s van, she had to throw up a couple more times to make her first ever visit to the ER complete. She was sent home with perscriptions for valium, ibuprofin and vicodin (yikes!). We ended up spending the night at Janet and Ron’s in a big comfy bed (thanks again!).
The next day was a little better in the pain arena but the pills had given Kara some digestive troubles. That evening we went up to have dinner with Luke who lives with Richard (who is currently on vacation) on top of a mountain! We got to have salad with veggies and greens from Luke’s garden and watched a thunderstorm roll through Santa Fe. We were hoping to catch the peak of the meteor shower but we’ll try to catch it tonight as it seems a bit clearer.
On recommendation from Luke (and confirmed by Michael), Kara went to see Harijot Singh, a local acupuncturist with over 40 years of training. Harijot cant see very well, but nevertheless was in tune, sensitive and clearly knew what he was doing. Kara got some needles and electro-therapy which made her lower back hum and vibrate. In Harijot’s office there were pictures of Guru Ram Das (the sikh guru), Tich Naht Hanh, the Dalai Lama, and Guru Nanak - a very blessed place.Kara is feeling better and is closer to finding her herbal witch doctor after talking to Harijot’s assistant.
We sign out from the Teahouse, our new hangout. Hope all is well and we send lots of love to you!
